This is mostly for Evan

Piers Anthony wrote a train into the Xanth novel my mom bought me for Christmas.

Some characters suggest Clio, the Muse of History, take the search engine home, which is marked "GOO".

For real? Is this the true source of "Google"? Or did Google come before "GOO"?

i highly doubt GOO came before Google. It's such a short little interlude, I'm sure Piers just wanted to make some kind of pop reference and had to figure out where he might slip it in...

holy shit, someone else who reads xanth novels =D i think i'm way waaaay behind on 'em if piers is still producing more installments of the series (the last title i remember was something involving a harpy), but i loved those so much when i was younger! i should see about picking one up again sometime...

I'm enjoying this one. Obviously it's not perfect, and it's lacking in many aspects, but it still has its moments...

You're pretty far behind. I think the one you're talking about, Harpy Thyme, was still somewhere in the teens, while the one I'm reading is #28! I skipped a few, as I haven't been keeping up, but it's still the same old place, and the main character (Clio) is old hat...waayyyy old hat.

yeah, i never felt inclined to read the bio of a space tyrant series, which did look a little lame...

xanth is fairly ridiculous, and definitely more or less written for kids, but sometimes he's clever, and usually quite creative. unfortunately, sometimes he doesn't exactly know what to do with his cleverness and it ends up in xanth. however, this is alright since even though it's not great literature, it can be fun and inspiring to read at times. (and i stress the 'at times')

granted it's a bit bullshit that he makes the dough, but then, he did make up this ridiculous scheme first! ; )
